inside looking out/outside looking in

none of us has actually laid eyes on our own face. i’ve painted many portraits from pictures but this is the first self portrait that i painted by looking into a mirror at my reflection looking back out at me.

self image is a strange thing and image has nothing to do with it. self portraits can’t help but be contrived and honesty in imagery is surely subjective.

i painted both of these last year. the first is with acrylics on paper and the second with oils on board. i really like painting self portraits and noticing where and when i chose to be honest, subjective, and lenient with my actual image.

i personally think that both of these paintings are the spittin’ image of me but then again what do i know; i’ve only seen my reflection!
